Liferay 6.1 portal software gets new setup wizard
Liferay has released version 6.1 of the Community Edition of its open source and Java-based enterprise portal software. Designed to power corporate intranets and extranets, it combines a content management system and a web application framework in one platform. The Community Edition of Liferay contains the latest features and enhancements for the platform which will appear in a few months in the Enterprise Edition.
The 6.1 update includes a new setup wizard aimed at simplifying first-time configuration for new instances of Liferay. Manual editing of configuration files is no longer required, as the installation wizard will compile all the necessary information; however, experienced Liferay users can still configure their systems manually.
Native support for storing and serving videos and other media types, as well as staging enhancements that allow users to edit individual sites concurrently, have also been added. Liferay 6.1 also includes enhanced staging support with a versioning feature and a rollback function that allows users to restore earlier versions of a site. Users can now edit public sites, but site administrators retain detailed control over which areas of a site are editable by the user. OpenSocial 1.1 pub/sub features are now supported.
A list of all the new features can be found in the 6.1 release announcement. Version 6.1 of the Community Edition of Liferay Portal is available to download from Liferay.com and is licensed under the LGPLv2.1. A quick start and user guide are provided. The company also offers a 30-day trial of the commercial Enterprise Edition of Liferay Portal that includes support and additional features. A comparison chart details the differences between the two versions.
