Lightspark update improves graphics capabilities
The recently released update to Lightspark, version 0.5.7, improves the graphics capabilities of the open source Flash player implementation for Linux. According to lead developer Alessandro Pignotti, this has been done by adding support for the BitmapData copyPixels method, soft masking and memory usage profiling, features that are all used by graphics-intensive Flash games.
Other changes include better support for bitmap draw data and fixes for a number of memory leaks. Pignotti also notes that initial work on fully-accelerated Stage3D support has begun, but notes that "it's still in early design phase".
Further information about the update can be found in the announcement post on the Technology Temple blog; at the time of writing, the release notes and change log have yet to be published. The LGPLv3-licensed Lightspark 0.5.7 is available to download a source tar ball or as a PPA package for Ubuntu from the project's Launchpad site.
