Linux Foundation report: Linux professionals wanted

The 2013 Linux Jobs Report shows Linux professionals are in high demand

The Linux Foundation has surveyed 850 hiring managers at small and medium businesses, larger corporations, government organisations and recruiting agencies, as well as 2,600 Linux professionals worldwide, about the state of the Linux job market for its 2013 Linux Jobs Report. The report was created in conjunction with the Dice.com career web site and concludes that 93% of the surveyed companies are planning to hire at least one Linux professional in the next six months and 90% said it was difficult to find people with the appropriate skill sets for these jobs.

According to the report, these circumstances have led to the average salary of Linux professionals rising by 9%, contrasting a 5% rise in IT salaries in general. Of the surveyed companies, 73% are looking for sysadmins with Linux skills, whereas 57% are hiring developers for Linux-related projects – this is the first time that the Linux Foundation has noted a higher demand for sysadmins than developers. Additionally, 25% of surveyed companies are intending to hire talent in the upcoming devops field. The report also says that three-quarters of the surveyed Linux professionals have received a call from a recruiter in the past six months and that 35% plan to change employer within the year.
