Linux From Scratch 7.1 published

The Linux From Scratch (LFS) project has published version 7.1 of its manual for building a custom Linux installation. The new release of the step-by-step instructions is 345 pages long and uses more up-to-date components than previous versions – for example, the 3.2.6 Linux kernel and version 4.6.2 of the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC). The update includes fixes to bootscripts and corrections to the text, as well as updates to 20 packages.

The Linux From Scratch book guides users through all of the steps required for using another system to build their own Linux system; the resulting system will be based on the same sources as other Linux distributions such as Fedora, openSUSE or Ubuntu. Building a distribution from scratch teaches users about the core components and allows them to customise the distribution to their own needs by installing only the features and packages that they require.

The new edition of the manual is available online; alternatively users can download it as a PDF PDF or as an HTML document. The Linux From Scratch book is released under a Creative Commons licence (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0) while the code contained within the guide is under an MIT licence.
