Linux From Scratch Version 7.0 released

Linux From Scrach The Linux From Scratch (LFS) project has released Version 7.0 of its manual for building a custom Linux installation. The new version of these step-by-step instructions uses more recent components than previous editions – for example the recently introduced version 3.1 of the Linux kernel, the fairly recent GCC version 4.6.1, and the Glibc 2.14.1. The new LFS also explains how to set up a "/run" directory in the root directory using tmpfs, an approach taken by various distributions for several months.

Like previous LFS versions, it explains all the steps for using another system to build a custom Linux system; this will be based on the same sources as Linux distributions such as Fedora, openSUSE or Ubuntu. It allows users to custom build simple Linux installations or explore the core components of a Linux system and their interactions.

Available as a PDF PDF and as an online HTML version, the new edition of the manual is now 347 pages long. For the first time, it includes MD5 checksums of the source code archives so that users can verify the integrity of their sources. The manual is released under the Creative Commons Licence (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0).
