Mentor organisations sought for Google Summer of Code 2013

Open source projects and organisations that wish to mentor student developers taking on programming tasks during Google's Summer of Code 2013 have until 29 March to submit their applications.

Since 2005, Google has been organising the Summer of Code (GSoC) where it brings together organisations with open source projects and student developers; it pays a stipend for their work, and gets the developers to take on tasks for the various projects. Google Summer of Code is one of the ways Google helps open source projects beyond those it develops or owns.

Google is looking for existing mentor organisations to refer newer, smaller organisations to the program so that it can expand further; last year saw 47 new organisations join GSoC. When GSoC 2012 had finished, 1,212 students from 69 countries, 2,221 administrators and mentors and 180 organisations had taken part. Students achieved an 88% success rate in completing projects, showing how effective GSoC can be for a project to get a task completed and bring new developers on board.
