Meteor developers set trajectory to 1.0 and beyond
Along with the release of version 0.5.1 of the Meteor framework, the Meteor developers have also opened up a roadmap for version 1.0 and beyond, giving potential users of the platform an insight into their plans. Meteor, the JavaScript/Node.js-based platform that allows developers to create applications that are synchronised automatically between different browser instances, has been developing rapidly since its introduction in April. In July, the company received $11.2 million in funding and the pace of development stepped up further.
The roadmap now has the developers focusing on better server-side performance and a overhaul of the package system. To get to version 1.0, the developers are looking at a multi-tier server architecture to allow Meteor to support very large numbers of concurrent users, easy forms, smarter handling of URLs in clients, and patterns for creating larger more modular applications. Windows support, an official testing framework, and SQL support are among the features planned for after the release of a 1.0 version.
Version 0.5.1 of Meteor includes a number of substantial enhancements too. For example, the realtime Mongo driver is now able to share results of identical database queries with multiple clients, thereby reducing the load on the database server, and a new smarter latency compensation algorithm has also been implemented. Full details are available in the release notes. Instructions for installing and working with Meteor are available in the project's documentation. The MIT-licensed project can be forked on GitHub.
