Micro Cloud Foundry sets sights on more frequent releases

VMware has released a new version of its Micro Cloud Foundry virtualisation software. Micro Cloud Foundry enables developers to set up an offline instance of the company's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), giving them the opportunity to develop and test applications on their local machine before deploying them to the company's cloud platform. Micro Cloud Foundry is a full version of the larger application, the only limitation being the power of the underlying virtual machine (VM).

The latest release includes support for running standalone apps, including background apps, the ability to run Java 7 applications, and improved Ruby support. Node.js applications can now use the NPM package manager.

To make it easier for developers to develop their applications on a local Micro Cloud Foundry instance and then deploy them to Cloud Foundry, the project's developers will be synchronising the release of updates to both parts of the project going forward. "Our manual process of building and testing the Micro Cloud Foundry VM simply wouldn’t be up to the task", the developers say. In future, releases of Micro Cloud Foundry will be made available at the same time as its bigger brother and will be tagged with the same version number in Git. According to the developers, users can therefore expect new releases about twice a week.

The latest Micro Cloud Foundry release is available from the Cloud Foundry web site and is licensed under the Apache 2.0 License.
