Microsoft's CodePlex website traffic: 119 per cent growth
Microsoft has made the usage data public for it's open source project hosting website, CodePlex. CodePlex was launched in May of 2006 as an open source project hosting site where Microsoft "does not control, review, revise, endorse or distribute the third party projects."
Microsoft's numbers show positive increases across the site from visits, to the amount of time spent on CodePlex. Hopefully the numbers will help to show Microsoft the importance of open source software. Below are the numbers that Microsoft has made public showing data from the number of visits, to the number of new projects.
Site Traffic | 2008 | 2007 | Per cent Increase |
Visits | 19,493,502 | 8,891,178 | +119 |
User Hours | 2,804,898 | 1,237,356 | +127 |
Unique Visitors | 9,811,365 | 4,532,440 | +116 |
New Registered Users | 66,553 | 38,651 | +72 |
New Projects | 4,542 | 2,130 | +113 |
The growth in CodePlex traffic clearly shows growing interest in open source software. In 2008 there were 12 new releases of the CodePlex software, which included many top user requested features. Some of the top open source projects on CodePlex were WPF, Silverlight, CompositWPF, MVCSamples and Unity.
