Microsoft starts supporting Linux on its Azure cloud
Microsoft is to start running Linux virtual machines on its Azure cloud platform. It has announced the release of a new preview version of the platform which will add Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) capabilities to it. As well as Windows Server 2008 and the release candidate of Windows Server 2012, Microsoft will be supporting openSUSE 12.1, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, Ubuntu 12.04 and CentOS 6.2 on the Hyper-V virtual machines that power Azure. The company has been working to support CentOS and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, but this is the first time customers have been able to use Linux in the Azure cloud.
On the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) side, updated language libraries for Java, .NET, PHP and Node.js have been included. Python has also been added to the list of supported languages. Other improvements in the new Azure preview release include the ability to set up virtual private networks (VPNs) which makes it possible to use Azure in a hybrid model with on-site deployments complementing the VMs running on Microsoft's servers.
