New KDE screen management tool ready for widespread use

Blue Systems developer Àlex Fiestas has announced that the open source KScreen management tool has seen its first stable release. With version 1.0, the screen management utility is now considered by its developers to be ready for general use and planning for the features of KScreen 1.1 is already under way, according to Fiestas. KScreen is designed to bring next generation screen management to the KDE desktop.

The tool is made up of two components, the libkscreen library originally developed by Fiestas and a user interface for it which is integrated in the KDE System Settings application; this was, in large parts, written by developer Dan Vrátil with sponsorship by Red Hat. Both parts interact to allow users to, according to the developers, "magically" configure monitors, TVs and projectors by just plugging them in, while still giving advanced users the ability to manually change settings through KDE's central configuration application. Under the hood, KScreen uses X.org's RandR application to communicate with the hardware.

Source code for KScreen 1.0 can be downloaded from the KDE servers. The tool is licensed under the GPLv2.
