New notifications for Ubuntu Jackalope

The notification system in action Over the weekend, Mark Shuttleworth announced that the user interface work on notifications will be included in Ubuntu 9.04, Jaunty Jackalope. The new notifications system is part of the work that Canonical have taken on to make the Linux desktop experience more consistent and enjoyable.

Notifications are one small, but important part of that work, providing a common way for applications and services to let users know something is happening. This includes handling feedback from volume and brightness keys. The notification work will be available for GNOME and KDE desktops, though some KDE developers have expressed unhappiness with design decisions taken by the Canonical developers.

However, the development work is not yet complete yet; Shuttleworth notes at least 35 applications will need tweaking to use the new notification system and asks for community help to locate any applications which aren't "using notifications elegantly". In the comments to Shuttleworths announcement, one user posted instructions on how to build and install the new notifications on the current Ubuntu 8.10, Intrepid Ibex.
