NexentaStor 3.1.0 arrives

Nexenta's NexentaStor project has announced the release of version 3.1.0 of its ZFS-based storage appliance. The 3.1.0 update brings several new features and includes "significant improvements for performance and manageability".

The proprietary NexentaStor is built on top of the free and open source Nexenta Core Platform (NCP), also known as Nexenta . Although proprietary, NexentaStor is also available in a free to use Community Edition. Based on an OpenSolaris kernel and Ubuntu userland, NCP includes only a command-line interface, whereas NexentaStor adds a storage management platform and WebUI.

According to a blog post by Garrett D'Amore, Sr. Director of Engineering at Nexenta Systems, an update to Nexenta Core Platform is due to arrive "in the next week or so". D'Amore says the developers have been, and are, working on the next release of NexentaStor which will also be the first version based on Illumos.

NexentaStor 3.1.0 adds support for VMware's vStorage API for Array Integration (VAAI), and the ability to manage disks and JBOD's using the SCSI Enclosure Services (SES) standard. Auto-Sync can now resume a sync and sync to multiple destinations to improve performance, and it no longer requires empty destinations for a first sync. Other changes include a new ConfGuard plugin for monitoring key configuration files, updates for version 28 of ZFS, Common Internet File System (CIFS) performance improvements, and new commands and additional optimisations.

More details about the latest NexentaStor Community Edition (CE), including a full list of changes and bug fixes, can be found in the release notes. NexentaStor 3.1.0 CE is available to download as a CD Image; VMware and Xen images are listed as 'coming soon'.

The Community Edition has a storage capacity limit of 18 TB; the Enterprise Edition offers support for commercial plug-ins, technical support and no capacity restrictions. A comparison of NexentaStor License Versions is available on the company's web site.
