OLPC announces XO Tablet and XO 4.0 touch screen laptop
The One Laptop Per Child Association (OLPCA) has announced the next generation of its Linux-based XO laptop and a new XO Tablet design at CES in Las Vegas. According to a report on The Verge, chip manufacturer Marvell demonstrated the XO 4.0 Touch laptop at the conference but did not show the XO Tablet which is being developed by Sakar International.
The XO 4.0 Touch is based on the Marvell Avastar 88W8787 System-on-a-Chip (SoC) and includes an 1GHz ARMADA PXA2128 CPU from the same company. The convertible laptop also features a multi-touch screen made by Neonode that features the dual display modes for bright sunlight and indoor applications that have been a main feature of the XO laptops since the first model. Reportedly the device demonstrated at CES was running a pre-release version of Fedora 18 and the OLPCA's Sugar user interface.
The XO Tablet, according to the OLPCA, features a 7" screen, 1GB of RAM and a 1GHz dual core Marvell ARMADA CPU. The device also includes a 1.3 megapixels front and a 2 megapixels rear camera and will use XO Learning, a new Android-based educational environment. The software is designed for children between the ages of 3 and 12 and is built on the idea of letting children explore interactive "dreams" that include "a rich learning experience and applications, books, games and videos" on a range of topics. The tablet will be sold in selected Walmart stores and the Walmart online shop in the US.
