Open Recall is a space on The H for those things that are too small to package as news but are worth covering. In this edition: a camera for the Raspberry Pi, Firefox 18.0.2, Joomla 2.5.9 and 3.0.3, Ruby 1.9.3-p385, Piwik switches to GitHub, a petition for Oracle to remove the Ask Toolbar from the Java installer, code completion for Vim, and Webconverger 17.

  • Raspberry Pi camera – The Raspberry Pi Foundation has written a blog post about the upcoming $25 camera module for the Raspberry Pi, which is "probably at least a month away". The hardware for the camera module has been finalised and is currently undergoing testing and some performance tuning.

  • Firefox 18.0.2 – The latest release of Firefox, version 18.0.2, fixes a JavaScript-related crashing problem with Facebook. Firefox 18.0.2 is available from Mozilla's web site for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, through the automatic updating function built into the browser, and from various Linux distributions' software repositories.

  • Joomla 2.5.9 and 3.0.3 – The developers of the open source content management system Joomla have updated both the long term support branch (2.5.x) and the current version (3.0.x). The updates close non-critical security holes and add localisation improvements to Joomla 3.0.3. The update to Joomla 2.5.9 also closes 22 bugs. Both updated versions can be obtained from the Joomla web site.

  • Ruby 1.9.3-p385 – The latest release of the Ruby programming language, version 1.9.3-p385, fixes a security hole where the HTML documentation generated by RDoc was vulnerable to a cross-site scripting (XSS) exploit. The developers recommend users patch their documentation or generate it again with a fixed version of RDoc.

  • Piwik switches to GitHub – The developers of the open source web analytics software Piwik have migrated their source code repository from SVN to Git and GitHub. Users can now browse the package's source code on GitHub.

  • Java toolbar petition – Members of the Java community are collecting signatures for a petition on change.org that tries to get Oracle to stop distributing the Ask Toolbar with the Windows installer of Java. At the time of writing, almost 10,000 of the goal of 250,000 signatures had been collected.

  • YouCompleteMe – Developer Val Markovic has released YouCompleteMe, a fuzzy search code completion engine for Vim. YouCompleteMe works as the user types and provides code completion for C, C++, Objective-C and Objective-C++ with a semantic, Clang-based engine. A second, identifier-based engine works with any programming language. The code for the open source Vim plugin is available on GitHub.

  • Webconverger 17 – The latest release of Webconverger, the Linux distribution built to create standalone web kiosks, adds a new installer that allows users to install the distribution to a USB stick. For Webconverger 17.0, the packages in the distribution repository have also been updated from being based on Debian Squeeze to a Debian Wheezy base. Webconverger does not need to be installed to a hard drive and can be run from a USB stick with persistent storage. When updating the distribution, updates get installed on the USB drive. Webconverger 17 can be downloaded from the project's web page. The source code is available from GitHub.
