Open Recall: SQLite, Fluendo codecs and the Netflix Cloud Prize

Open Recall is a space on The H for those things that are too small to package as news, but are worth covering. In this edition: SQLite 3.7.16, Fluendo Codec Pack for GStreamer 1.0, RethinkDB 1.4, the Netflix Cloud Prize, and IPFire 2.13 Core Update 67.

• SQLite 3.7.16 – Version 3.7.16 of the SQLite library introduces a number of performance improvements, adds the unicode(A) and char(X1,...,XN) functions, and brings more commands for the SQLite specific PRAGMA statement. Several bugs were also fixed in the release: a complete list is available in the SQLite 3.7.16 change log. Source code and binaries for a large number of platforms are available on the SQLite download page.

• Fluendo Codec Pack for GStreamer 1.0 – Fluendo has released Fluendo Codec Pack 18, which supports version 1.0 of GStreamer from last September. As most media applications on Linux that use GStreamer have now migrated to version 1.0, Fluendo has delivered this update to its codecs to officially support it as well. Fluendo Codec Pack 18 has been tested with Fedora 18, openSUSE 12.3 and the current development versions of Ubuntu 13.04. The codec bundle can be purchased on Fluendo's web site.
  

• RethinkDB 1.4 – Released with the code name "Some Like it Hot", RethinkDB 1.4 improves the distributed database's wire protocol, updates drivers, and introduces support for query history in the software's data explorer. A new build system is also included and Mac OS X users can install the package with an improved Homebrew script. More information about the release is available from RethinkDB's announcement.

• Netflix Cloud Prize – Netflix is running a contest for developers of open source software on GitHub. Developers who patch one of Netflix's existing open source projects or who write a standalone program of their own, maybe a new member of the company's simian army, can win prizes of up to $10,000 in one of ten categories. To enter, developers fork the contest repo on GitHub and modify it to contain their submission.
  

• IPFire 2.13 Core Update 67 – The latest release of IPFire, a firewall Linux distribution, includes a new kernel based on the upstream Linux 3.2 release and supports more hardware. IPFire 2.13 Core Update 67 also fixes a problem with HP Compaq SmartArray RAID controllers and can now be installed on these devices. A number of other improvements are listed in the release announcement. IPFire is available for 32-bit i586 systems and the armv5tel architecture from the project's web site.
