Open Recall is a space on The H for those things that are too small to package as news but are worth the linkage. Open Recall collates the interesting stories that didn't quite make the cut. This edition is all about new apps for the Linux desktop.

  • Terminology – The Enlightenment project has released a new terminal emulator, packed with innovative features such as inline display of link content, including images and videos, multiple copy and paste clipboards, advanced visual effects and support for displaying the application via OpenGL and the Linux framebuffer. While the project is only a month old and still under heavy development, it already looks very promising. The Terminology source code is available for download from the project's code repository and is licensed under a two-clause BSD license.

  • Lightread – Available from a personal package archive (PPA), Lightread is a new RSS reader application for the Linux desktop. The application was written as part of the Ubuntu App Showdown with the aim of creating a lightweight yet good looking tool for reading news feeds on the desktop. The application is BSD licensed and can be downloaded from Launchpad.

  • MenuLibre – For users who want to edit the menus and Quicklists of Ubuntu's Unity interface, MenuLibre, also written as part of the Ubuntu App Showdown, provides a graphical way of doing just that. MenuLibre can also edit the menus of the GNOME 3, Xfce and LXDE desktop environments and is available from a PPA hosted on Launchpad under the GPLv3 licence.

  • Adminer – Although not a new project, the web-based database administration tool Adminer has matured to become a decent alternative to the well known phpMyAdmin application. The tool is written in PHP and allows users to easily manipulate SQL databases without requiring in-depth knowledge of SQL syntax. Adminer is small and light, the whole application comprises only one file, even the icons are encoded into it. Adminer is available for download as a standalone PHP file, packaged for several Linux distributions and as a plugin for WordPress and other content management systems. The tool is dual-licensed under the Apache 2.0 Licence and the GPLv2.

  • DayJournal – Another application that was written as part of Ubuntu's App Showdown is the date-based note taking application DayJournal. The developer sums up his application with the tagline "DayJournal is like typing on paper", and says its goal is to be a simple, no-frills way of keeping a daily log for whatever purpose might be applicable. The application is GPLv3 licensed and available from a PPA on Lanchpad.
