Open Recall: siduction, Puppy Linux, Diaspora, Moodle
Open Recall is a space on The H for those things that are too small to package as news but are worth covering. This edition catches up with a number of open source project releases: siduction 13.1.0, Puppy Linux 5.6, Wifislax 4.4, Diaspora 0.1.0.0 and Moodle 2.5.
- siduction 13.1.0 – The developers of siduction have released version 13.1.0, code-named "Firestarter", of their distribution based on Debian Unstable. With Debian's unstable branch being unfrozen again after the release of Debian 7 "Wheezy", siduction is once again benefiting from new versions of applications being included in the repositories. Version 13.1.0 is the first version of siduction to include GNOME 3 as well. The siduction live images are available for download from the distribution's mirrors.
- Puppy Linux 5.6 – Puppy Linux developer Barry Kauler has released the latest version of his flagship distribution. Precise Puppy 5.6 is, as the name suggests, based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" and includes a new X.org setup wizard, a non-PAE kernel based on the 3.2.44 upstream kernel release and a number of drivers for analog modems for users that don't have access to broadband internet connections. A detailed list of new features is available in the release notes.
- Wifislax 4.4 – A new version of Wifislax, a Slackware-based live CD with security and forensic tools, has been released by its developers. Wifislax 4.4 comes with KDE 4.10.3 or an alternative Xfce desktop and now has an English boot menu which makes the Spanish distribution more accessible for English speaking users.
- Diaspora 0.1.0.0 – The federated open source social network platform Diaspora has seen a new release. After moving the project over into community development in August 2012, the developers have now released version 0.1.0.0 of the project. The new version includes features such as photo uploads from mobile devices, a post preview function and keyboard navigation as well as a number of bug fixes. Details of the changes are available in the project's change log.
- Moodle 2.5 – Moodle co-founder Martin Dougiamas has announced the release of Moodle 2.5 after two months of development work. Major new features include support for Mozilla's OpenBadges, the beginnings of support for themes designed with Twitter's Bootstrap framework, and usability and accessibility improvements throughout the application. Aside from Moodle 2.5, updates for the stable 2.2.x, 2.3.x and 2.4.x branches of the application have also been released.
