OSADL Logo The Linux Foundation has announced that the Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) has become its newest member. The OSADL, founded in 2005, is a consortium that promotes the use of Linux and open source software on embedded systems, such as those in machine and plant control. It also supports development of the RT-Preempt real-time Linux kernel patch.

According to the Foundation, OSADL will contribute and collaborate with other members on embedded and industrial Linux efforts. Discussing the announcement, OSADL General Manager Dr. Carsten Emde said, "The Linux Foundation provides an important resource for people to collaborate on Linux, both online and at its events,” adding that, “We’re looking forward to the collaboration opportunities and taking Linux to the next level in the embedded and industrial environments.”

A number of other companies have joined the Linux Foundation in recent months, including Collabora, LG, Parallels, Ricoh and rPath.
