Open Source Mediaplayer Songbird 1.1.1 released

The open source media player Songbird has been updated to version 1.1.1 which includes several new features and bug fixes. The new version of the Mozilla-based media player now has the ability to watch a folder hierarchy for changes and automatically import new tracks to a user's library. Additionally, if a file is removed from a folder, the corresponding track will also be removed from the music library. Users can now fetch album artwork 'on-demand' by selecting or right-clicking on a track and choosing "Get Album Artwork". By default, Songbird will retrieve available album art from Last.fm, but you can now select other sources for album art, such as Amazon via an add-on.

The 1.1.1 release also evaluates Songbird music files to see if they contain replay gain (including iTunes-specific) information to automatically adjust the playback gain appropriately. Uninterrupted playback (also called gapless playback) and MTP device support have been updated. The updated version includes improved memory usage and improved performance thanks to the database being re-tuned "to be less greedy with your system's memory." Depending on a user's personal needs, Songbird has the ability to use add-ons to add extra features or support, such as iPod synching. The player can also be skinned to change its appearance.
