GitLab logo The GitLab development team has released version 3.0 of its open source repository management software for the Git version control system. Used for self-hosted repositories, GitLab is based on Ruby on Rails and Gitolite, and is described as a "fast, secure and stable solution" by its developers. It includes the same features as those offered by the GitHub project hosting service, which also appears to be the inspiration for GitLab's user interface.

The project's 13th release, GitLab 3.0, includes a new web editor and improvements to file browsing. The update also introduces unofficial support for the open source PostgreSQL object-relational database. Other changes include API updates, the addition of Project Groups and significant Files & Commits performance improvements, as well as various refactoring and code cleanups. The update also addresses a critical bug related to deleting/adding ssh keys. All users are advised to update their GitLab instances.

More details, including screenshots of the new version, can be found in the announcement blog post. Version 3.0 of GitLab is available to download from the project's GitHub page and installation instructions are provided. An online demo is also available for users interested in trying out the software. GitLab is distributed under the MIT Licence and development is sponsored by Brightbox.
