The Munich based SpaceNet AG has published spmfilter, an open source programming framework for content and spam filtering modules which can be used alongside existing mail servers. The C-based framework includes its own generic SMTP engine allowing it to be used with any MTA (mail transport agent). The incoming mail can then be passed to any plugins that have been loaded into the framework.

Plugins can use APIs for header and message parsing or to connect to backend databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, BerkleyDB or LDAP with failover and load balancing options. Version 0.4 also switches to the Cmake build system and adds TLS support.

The project, which is in its early days at version 0.4, has a few plugins available to create copies of mail, archive mail, pass mail through the open source ClamAV anti-virus engine or to pass it through SpamAssassin. The LGPL licensed framework and plugins are available to download. An example plugin is also available.
