The OpenNebula project has announced the release of OpenNebula 3.6, code named "Lagoon" after the Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8). The latest stable version of the open source cloud computing toolkit brings performance improvements and better virtualisation management.

OpenNebula 3.6 also includes integration with the OpenNebula Marketplace which allows users to download and deploy pre-built virtual appliances. This functionality has been included in the SunStone GUI and the OpenNebula command line tools. Developers can also package up their software as a virtual appliance and publish it through the Marketplace in a similar manner to VMware's Virtual Appliance Marketplace.

Other features in the new version are hotplug support for disk volumes and existing VM images as well as rewritten quota and disk space accounting tools which are now part of OpenNebula core. The developers have also added support for VM rescheduling, cloning of disk images, hard reboots and more flexible data storage facilities.

OpenNebula 3.6 is the latest stable release of the project and as such, the developers recommend upgrading to this release as soon as possible. More details on the new version can be found in the release notes and the software can be downloaded from the project's web site as source or binary packages for CentOS 6.0, Ubuntu 10.04, openSUSE 11.4 and Debian 6.0.2. The source code is licensed under the Apache 2.0 licence.
