The developers of openSUSE have announced that version 12.1 of the distribution, which was released on 16 November 2011, has reached the end of its maintenance life. With this, the 18 months of bugfix and security support from SUSE has ended and the developers recommend that users upgrade to openSUSE 12.3 (by way of first upgrading to version 12.2).

OpenSUSE 12.1 was the first release of the distribution that was maintained using SUSE's OpenBuildService, a process that allowed enhanced participation by the community and that has become the way in which openSUSE has been maintained ever since. In total, the developers shipped 789 updates for the release, 389 of which were security updates – 65 updates more than were shipped during the openSUSE 11.4 maintenance cycle. The developers say that the increase in bug fixes is "related to the easier participation in working on openSUSE with the OpenBuildService."

The current stable version of the distribution is openSUSE 12.3 which was released three months ago. The developers are currently working on openSUSE 13.1, expected to be released in November.
