OpenStreetMap ask for donations for new server

OpenStreetMap is asking for donations to raise £10,000 for a new API database server and peripheral hardware. The OpenStreetMap (OSM) project, run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, is an open source project that is building a free online map, not based on any copyright or licensed map data. A blog post on OpenGeoData.org shows the original servers still in use by the mapping project.

Increasing popularity and growth of OpenStreetMaps has lead to increased demands on the hardware and software that currently run the service. The donations are being collected to purchase a 3U Rackmount server with two Quadcore processors, 24GB RAM and ten SAS 15k RPM disks, which will be used to expand the project's goal to build "the most detailed map of the planet."

At the time of this writing they have raised £4,281 of their £10,000 funding target.
