PageSpeed arrives on NGINX to boost web speeds

Google's PageSpeed project, which allows web sites to optimise performance without manual intervention from web site administrators, has been ported to the NGINX web server. Google announced the release of the beta version of ngx_pagespeed following three months of alpha testing with "hundreds of sites". The module is based on the mod_pagespeed module for the Apache HTTP Server, which was launched in November 2010, and performs a range of on-the-fly optimisations of pages to help sites load faster.

PageSpeed modules can re-compress images as needed, extend cache times for logos, minify CSS and JavaScript, and tweak CMS-generated pages in line with Google's "Make the Web Faster" Best Practices. The range of over 40 optimising filters is now available for NGINX web server users and, according to participants in the alpha, they have seen up to 75% reductions in page sizes and 50% faster rendering in some cases.

Ngx_pagespeed is licensed under the Apache 2.0 licence and hosted on GitHub. Currently only Linux systems including Red Hat, CentOS, Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu are supported.
