Perl Foundation icon Since September 2011, Nicholas Clark has been working on improving the Perl 5 Core, funded by a $20,000 grant from the Perl Foundation. The term of the work is coming to an end and Clark is now seeking another $20,000 to continue the work of the original Improving Perl 5 grant. The Foundation is consulting with the community before making the final decision whether to go ahead with the extension which would see Clark devoting another 400 hours of dedicated work to the project.

Although Clark does much work on Perl for free, the "Improving Perl 5" work has allowed him to focus on Perl 5 and the detailed work needed to create improvements without creating regressions or new classes of bugs. An exemplar of Clark's work can be seen in his most recent monthly report on tasks undertaken. An extension of the grant would allow him to continue with tasks such as reducing the complexity of the core of Perl 5, fixing bugs and providing guidance and support to new volunteers.

The "Improving Perl 5" grant and other grant activities of the Perl Foundation have been made possible by donations such as the $100,000 Craigslist donation from January 2012.
