Photographer.io software stack open sourced

Robert May, the founder and main developer of the Photographer.io photo sharing site, has announced on the project's blog that he is open sourcing the code for the application running the online platform. The Photographer.io site is currently in beta and gives users unlimited storage for photographs with a 100 photos per month upload limit that can be increased by referring other users. The service is ad-free and will be supported by subscriptions and affiliate links for photography hardware in the future, according to its about page.

May says he is opening up the source code for the underlying application because it is something he always wanted to do with one of his projects and because having additional developers and a peer-reviewed code base will take some pressure off him as the sole developer on the project. The application has been in development for around two months and May says he wanted to open source the code base from the very beginning of the project. Describing the current progress of the project, May says: "There’s lots to do, including documentation and testing, but it’s hopefully in a state where you can at least look through the code and get an understanding of what’s going on."

Users can already try the beta version of Photographer.io free of charge

The source code for the Photographer.io software is available under an MIT licence at GitHub. The developer has also promised to publish more information on how to contribute to the project's development. In the meantime, he calls potential contributors to direct questions to the project's Twitter account.
