The Piwik developers have announced that they are starting a crowdfunding drive to support new features that they want to integrate into the open source analytics software for its next major version. For Piwik 2.0, the developers are planning to introduce new analytics features, new reports, custom alerts and new administrative options. The crowdfunding is feature-based and the first addition the developers are soliciting funding for is new maps functionality that is in the process of being rewritten completely from scratch.

Currently, Piwik's maps are the only part of the application that is still dependent on Flash being installed in the administrator's browser. To fix this, the developers are writing a new, open source mapping library that uses SVG, JavaScript and HTML5 to render maps. According to the developers, Piwik will be the first project to feature a fully open source region and city-level mapping library. To fund the developers working on this feature, the Piwik project is trying to raise $4000 by 15 January 2013 on its own crowdfunding web site. At the time of writing, $150 had been pledged. Another initiative seeks to fund a custom segments editor that will allow users to customise views of their data.

In the announcement, Piwik developer Adrian Speyer says users should expect new crowdfunding initiatives for features to be added to the list in the future. The developers have approximately 50 possible improvements lined up that they want to introduce for Piwik 2.0.
