Potential new OpenOffice logos shortlisted
Source: Apache OpenOffice blog
As the development of Apache OpenOffice 4.0 progresses, the Apache OpenOffice project is looking for a new logo to visually represent the project and now – after 40 logo submissions and over five thousand entries in a community survey – the shortlist is available. A report on the survey shows that responses came from around the world.
Users were asked, on a 5-point scale, whether they strongly liked or disliked the entries, and given the option to leave a comment on each design. It was these preferences that were then used as a basis for scoring the logos, rather than the more common "vote for a favourite" scheme. This has resulted in a shortlist of seven logos, all echoing the "flying birds" motif of OpenOffice, which was one of the requirements of the design brief.
The call for logos was issued in March. The submitted logos had to be suitable for use in splash-screens, icons and on the web site as a general brand; designers were encouraged to show their designs in those contexts too. There was also a requirement that any font used had to be available as open source.
The next stage of the process will see the comments from the survey and other feedback being given to the designers of the logos, who can then submit revised logos to the project, where they will be reviewed and a final logo selected; the preference at Apache is to talk about an issue until there is a consensus and only vote on an issue when necessary. There is one logo for which the feedback will be tricky to deliver as its creator "Chris R" left no contact information. Apache OpenOffice 4.0 is expected to be released before the middle of the year and will, among other things, include many code contributions from the OpenOffice.org-based Lotus Symphony.
