Qt Jambi to be open source

After roughly two years of development, Qt Software has said it will stop working on Qt Jambi, a Java version of the Qt GUI library. Qt says this is "in order to focus resources on the Qt cross platform application and UI framework." Qt Jambi will soon be released under the Lesser General Public License (LPGL) as an open source project. Qt Software, originally Trolltech, is now a Nokia subsidiary after Nokia acquired them in June of 2008.

Qt Jambi version 4.5.0_01 will be published in March of this year. After that Qt Jambi will be a Qt Labs open source project. The company has announced that it will provide maintenance software support for one year from the 4.5.0_01 release date.

In January the company had already announced that the regular version of the Qt GUI toolkit, written in C++ and reaching version 4.5 in March, will be released under the LGPL. Qt is available for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows and also forms the basis for the Unix / Linux KDE desktop. The newly released technology preview of the Java variant is said to come with all of the features in 'regular' Qt 4.5, which is currently available as a release candidate.
