RHEL clone Scientific Linux 6.3 released

The Scientific Linux (SL) project has announced the availability of version 6.3 of its Linux distribution. The new SL release is based on the sources of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.3 released six weeks ago. As usual, it therefore contains all of the features introduced in the most recent RHEL release which, in addition to bug fixes and optimisations, saw several new virtualisation features added.

Scientific Linux 6.3 also brings a few other distribution-specific innovations, all of which are detailed in the release notes. These include updates to the OpenAFS distributed filesystem and, by popular request from users, the addition of the definition for the RPM Fusion repositories, which provide more software for Fedora, RHEL and their derivatives.

The Linux distribution is available to download for x86-32 and x86-64 systems from the project's mirrors. Mainly developed by CERN and other labs and universities, Scientific Linux is the last of the three major RHEL clones to publish its version of RHEL 6.3: Oracle made its RHEL derivative available at the end of June and this was followed by the CentOS project about two weeks later. Projects based on the CentOS clone have also released new versions, including the ClearOS 6.3 small business server and the desktop-oriented Stella 6.3 remix.
