Rasberry Pi Foundation announces the Gertboard
The Gertboard adds I/O ports and an Arduino microcontroller to the Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced the Gertboard, a breakout board for the Raspberry Pi mini-computer. The Gertboard, named after Gert van Loo who designed the original Raspberry Pi prototype, comes with an Arduino microcontroller and extends the Raspberry Pi by adding three buttons, LEDs and a variety of I/O ports.
The board is sold as a kit that has to be assembled and soldered – it can now be pre-ordered from the element14 site for £30. Together with the Gertboard, the Raspberry Pi can be used to control a variety of electronics, from getting input from sensors to control motors and switching devices on and off; it could even be used in robotics applications.
According to the Raspberry Pi Foundation, although the Gertboard is not an official Raspberry Pi product, the Foundation endorses it "wholeheartedly." Interested users can already download the assembly
and user manuals for the device.
