Raspberry Pi Summer Code Contest for children announced

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced a programming contest for children, to take place over the summer holidays. The only requirement for entering the contest is that the submitted application runs on the Raspberry Pi. The foundation is providing $4,000 total in prize money divided between the six best entries in each category. The contest runs until 1 September, being scheduled over the summer to cover as much of the holidays in countries in the northern hemisphere as possible.

The contest is separated into two age categories: 13 years and under and 14 to 18 years. Entries will be judged by the foundation, based on skill. The winners from each category will each receive $1,000, with $200 going to the five runners-up in each age group. Participants who do not have a Raspberry Pi can use an emulator to write their entry. The goal is to write an application "which impresses the judges", as the rules of the contest put it.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation plans to run more contests like this one, its ambitious plan being to organise competitions on a weekly basis in the future. The foundation has also provided a poster that interested parties can print out to promote the contest.
