Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 released
Red Hat has announced the release of version 5.5 of its Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distribution aimed at enterprise customers. In addition to bug fixes and maintenance patches released since RHEL 5.4, the latest release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux includes a number of changes, new functionality and driver updates to support newer hardware.
RHEL 5.5 features several updates and enhancements to the Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor, Red Hat's preferred virtualisation solution, including support for the large memory systems of new servers and better pass through of PCI devices to guest systems. Other changes include additional I/O optimisations and support for the latest Intel eight-core Nehalem-EX, AMD 12-core Opteron 6100 Series and IBM eight-core Power7 processors. The Linux distributor has also updated various desktop applications, including OpenOffice and the Metacity window manager for the GNOME desktop.
