Red Hat and Intel invest in MongoDB maker 10gen
10gen, developer of the MongoDB NoSQL database, has announced that Red Hat and Intel Capital, Intel's investment arm, have made investments in the company. 10gen, which completed a $42 million funding round in May, says that it will use the funds from the deal to support product development and improve relations with its community. The companies have not disclosed the scale of the investment.
Red Hat and 10gen have a history of collaborating on projects, such as integrating the NoSQL database into Red Hat's OpenShift Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). Both companies also worked on MongoDB support in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and JBoss. For Intel, on the other hand, this is the first investment in the NoSQL space; it hopes to improve MongoDB support on platforms powered by its processors.
MongoDB is an open source, document-oriented NoSQL database that stores data in a JSON-like format. For an overview of 10gen's recent commercial partnerships, see The H's feature "10gen: Growing the MongoDB world".
