Red Hat certifies RHEL for Facebook's Open Compute systems
Linux distributor Red Hat has joined the Open Compute Project. The OCP was founded by Facebook and develops specifications for building highly efficient data centres, ranging from specifications for motherboards, server chassis and cabinets, to ones for transformers for connecting to the high voltage electrical grid.
As a new member of the Open Compute Project, Red Hat's first step has been to certify Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) on two Open Compute systems. The next step will be testing Red Hat's virtualisation platform on these systems.
CTO Brian Stevens described joining the Open Compute Project as a natural step for Red Hat. According to Stevens, Red Hat is focused on innovation and benefiting end users and so "it was natural to take part in this project to not only extend the benefits of Red Hat products to these systems, but to also help expand the reach of open source technologies as a whole.”
