Red Hat has set up the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 Ideas Discussion Group on its customer portal. The discussion group is intended for customers with a RHEL service contract to discuss what improvements they would like to see in the next major version of the Linux distribution for corporate customers.

A development schedule for RHEL 7 has not yet been published. Three and a half years passed between RHEL version 5.0 and version 6.0, which was introduced last autumn. Talking to The H's associates at heise Open, Red Hat executives indicated that they thought this was too long, and that new RHEL versions should be released at shorter intervals in the future. However, the Linux distributor will probably spend at least two years developing the new version, which means that RHEL 7 is unlikely to be released before the beginning of 2013.
