Report: Samsung to abandon Symbian

According to senior vice president Don Joo Lee, talking to Digitimes, Samsung is to stop using the Symbian operating system on its mobile phones. The company will focus on its Windows Mobile, Android and the new Samsung bada "open operating system". Samsung are, according to Lee, a top handset vendor in a number of markets including the US, UK, France, Russia, the Netherlands and Chile. No details were given as to whether Samsung would be giving up its seat on the Symbian Foundation board.

Few details were available for bada, Samsung's new open mobile operating system. The announcement for bada says it will set out to provide an "innovative user experience" with "innovative visual design". No mention of whether bada will be open source or based on open source was made at this time; the bada Developer site is due to open in December and may offer more details then. The name "bada" is based on the Korean word for "ocean".
