Scientific Linux 6.2 released

More than two months after the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.2, the Scientific Linux project has announced the availability of version 6.2 of its Scientific Linux (SL) distribution, based on this version of RHEL. The release notes mention the SL-specific new features in this version, including updated LiveCD tools and an OpenAFS update to version 1.6.0-97.z2.sl6.

The release notes also list the main differences compared to Red Hat's original, which, according to the developers, Scientific Linux is fully compatible with. As usual, all the new features introduced in RHEL 6.2 can be found in SL 6.2 – including numerous optimisations in the virtualisation, resource management and filesystem areas. The release also offers improved hardware support through new and improved drivers, and contains a major X Server update.

Unlike RHEL, which is available on a subscription basis, Scientific Linux, which is mainly developed by CERN and other academic developers, is available free of charge. Other RHEL 6.2 clones such as CentOS 6.2 and Oracle Linux 6.2 have been available since mid-December.
