Service Pack 2 for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 released

SUSE logo Nearly three years after launching SUSE Linux Enterprise 11, SUSE, an independent division of AttachMate, has released a second service pack (SP2) for its Linux distribution aimed at enterprises. SLES 11 SP2 switches to the 3.0 Linux kernel in what the company calls its "first platform developed through a forward-looking approach", referring to its use of more upstream Linux features for its Enterprise release, rather than consolidation around established kernels and other components.

The company notes that this major update is the first Linux platform to offer commercial support for the Btrfs filesystem. Oracle is planning to offer official Btrfs support in the future, but generally the filesystem is still considered to be experimental by the Linux kernel developers. SUSE has incorporated tools such as Snapper and Zypper to make use of the copy-on-write and snapshot capabilities of Btrfs to help with auditing and rolling back system configuration changes.
