Songbird logo Nearly six months after it entered beta, version 1.10 of the open source Songbird media player has been released. According to the developers, the update is primarily focused on improving device support. Their goal was to "break out of the old erase-and-sync model to create a compelling, intuitive two-way sync experience".

Songbird 1.10 includes support for two-way synchronisation between portable devices and the Songbird library; when copying files from a device or ripping new ones to the library, the tracks are automatically organised by Artist and Album in the default Music directory. Users can manage the media on their devices using either drag-and-drop actions or the sync button mechanism; this no longer deletes media from a user's device and automatically avoids duplicates when users mix and match their device transfer methods.

The developers note that the PlaylistCommandsBuilders interface has been depreciated and that add-on builders are advised to use the new PlayListCommands interface. Users running a previous version of Songbird can upgrade to the new release via the built-in "Check for Updates" function.

Further information about the new version can be found in the release notes and in a post on the Songbird Blog. Songbird 1.10.1 (build 2160) is available to download for Windows 7, Vista or XP SP3, and Mac OS X 10.5 or later. Songbird source code is licensed under the GPLv2.
