The Washington Times releases open source editing tools

The Washington Times is providing the source code for some of its self-developed editing tools, to the public. In a struggling financial market, where content is still king, major news outlets are working to differentiate themselves, through being more open and interactive online and by providing access to their data and tools.

Five tools, including a combined issue tracker with versioning system and management software for multimedia content, are being released by the Washington Times under the Apache License (Apache 2.0). The software was developed using Python and uses the Django framework. The tools are available to download for free and more tools are reported to be following shortly.

The Washington Times is not the only media organisation working towards being more open. The New York Times recently held an inaugural API Seminar for "Times Open" strategy. The Times Open strategy is a program that focuses on making the data from the New York Times more accessible to the developer community.
