Thunderbird 13 arrives with Filelink for large attachments

The Mozilla Project developers have released version 13 of the open source Thunderbird news and email client. The update introduces a new feature for sending large attachments called "Filelink". Instead of sending large attachments directly to recipients, Filelink allows users to upload them to an online storage service and send a link to the file. Its developers say that this should help to avoid "bounce back" of emails. YouSendIt is currently the only supported service for handling the large attachments.

Source: Mozilla With Thunderbird 13, users can now sign up for a personalised email address from within the application. Once users have selected and setup their new email address, Thunderbird will automatically be configured to send and receive messages. The service is provided through a new partnership between Mozilla and domain name and email management services Hover.com and Gandi.net.

Overall start-up time and stability are also said to have been improved by fixing for more than 200 bugs, including some that could cause the application to crash. The developers note that the minimum system requirements for Thunderbird on Windows have changed; Thunderbird 13 requires Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later.

Current users can either upgrade using the built-in update tool or wait for the automatic update notification.
