Tiny Core Linux 3.8 released

The Tiny Core developers have released version 3.8 of their minimal Linux distribution. Based on the 2.6.33-3 Linux kernel, Tiny Core Linux 3.8 brings improvements to system auditing, as well as updates to AppsAudit, which now offers to automatically fetch missing dependencies and report 'stale' extensions.

According to lead developer Robert Singledecker, the BusyBox tool collection has been updated to version 1.18.5 and sleep in rc.shutdown has been removed to improve shutdown speed. To handle failures when downloading extensions, tce-load now allows for the repeat download of non-installed extensions.

Tiny Core Linux 3.8 in action Other changes include the addition of new system icons, support for EtherDrives and ATA over ethernet, also improvements to searching, wallpaper and the AppsBrowser application browser/installer. The developers also note that the Multi Core version, first introduced with Tiny Core 3.7, is now a hybrid ISO which allows users to copy it directly to a USB device without the need for an external utility.

Tiny Core is a minimal Linux distribution that weighs in at just over 10 MB in size. The "tiny frugal" desktop distribution features the BusyBox tool collection and a minimal graphics system based on Tiny X and JWM. The core can run entirely in RAM, allowing for a very fast boot. With the help of online repositories, Tiny Core Linux can be expanded to include additional applications.

The Tiny Core Base (TCB) system includes a desktop, while the Micro Core version includes a command-line interface; Multi Core images includes both Tiny Core, Micro Core, networking tools and an installer.
