Today is "I Love Free Software Day"

With today being Valentine's Day, the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) has decided to declare it I Love Free Software Day and is calling on free software fans to take the opportunity to declare their love for free software. They can do so by sending a thank you letter to a developer or active supporter, posting a personal statement on free software on Twitter or identi.ca with the hashtag #ilovefs, writing a blog entry on it, or placing a banner on their web site.

Further FSFE suggestions for how people committed to free software can do a good deed include hugging a developer (with their permission of course), giving them a book (including a donation to the FSFE) or buying them a drink. Fans can also, of course, simply donate to one of the many free software projects.

The FSFE is hoping that its campaign will raise awareness of free software and the people who dedicate themselves to it. The objective for Valentine's day 2012 is to get "more love reports than bug reports". According to Matthias Kirschner from the FSFE, the free software world tends to be more focused on criticism – bug reports, proposals for improvements and feature requests. "I Love Free Software Day" aims to redress the balance by providing an opportunity to give praise and recognition.
