Tokutek has announced version 1.0 of TokuMX, a version of MongoDB that has its storage layer replaced with Tokutek's storage engine. The storage engine, which is available for MySQL and MariaDB, uses the company's patented Fractal Tree indexing. In developing TokuMX, the developers have also replaced the locking and replication code of MongoDB to get better workload performance as the client count increases. The focus for TokuMX is on large databases of over 50GB, where its indexing technology can bring the most benefit to performance.

The company says that, in testing, it has seen a 268 times improvement in query performance and a 532 times improvement in multi-key index insertions. A more modest ten times improvement is cited for insertions and indexing.

Along with the company's indexing technology, the Tokutek storage engine also uses a write-optimised compression scheme that can reduce storage requirements by 90 per cent without changing the performance characteristics of the database. There is also the added benefit of bringing transactions to MongoDB with MVCC and ACID reliability. TokuMX is application-level compatible with existing applications, though some commands, such as compact and repairDatabase are deprecated because the TokuMX data storage doesn't require either compacting or repair in use.

TokuMX is mostly licensed under the AGPL 3.0, though some components are under the Apache Licence 2.0 and the TokuKV indexing library is under the GPLv2 with an additional patent rights grant. TokuMX community edition binaries and source code are available to download. An enterprise edition is expected to follow to replicate the TokuDB product availability, which will offer extra tools and technical support.
