Developers have ported the X Window System (X11) to run on the G1 Android smartphone (aka the HTC Dream). X11 is a window system server that provides the infrastructure for graphical user interfaces (GUI). Having X11 run on the open source smartphone operating system opens the door to viewing and using other desktops and applications. The instructions provided show that X11 can run on all Android devices, but it requires that the Debian shell tools are installed.

X11 does not actually replace the Android desktop, rather the screen connects to a VNC server. Only one VNC client is required to operate the X11 desktop on the smartphone. The advantage is that the VNC client on Android allows a user to run and use X11 and Android applications, side-by-side.
