openSUSE 11.2 final arrives
Following several development releases and two release candidates, the openSUSE development team have announced the availability of the final version of openSUSE 11.2, code named Fichte. The 11.2 release features a number of changes, package updates and new features.
The latest openSUSE distribution is based on version 2.6.31 of the Linux kernel and includes GNOME 2.28 and KDE 4.3. As previously reported, unlike past releases, users installing openSUSE 11.2 onwards from DVD will be presented with KDE pre-selected as the default choice of desktop, although GNOME will still be available as an alternate choice. KDE 4 is now the only supported KDE version. The distribution now features a desktop kernel specifically tuned for desktop users and uses Ext4 as the default file system, however, Ext3 will continue to be supported.
The developers note that, as a final version should be available shortly, the release ships with Thunderbird 3.0 Beta 4. However, Thunderbird 2.0 will be supported for a "very short period of time, once version 3.0 is available" for users that still depend on add-ons that are only available for version 2.0. Other package updates include version 2.0 of Mozilla's SeaMonkey "all-in-one internet application suite", OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 , VirtualBox 3.0.10 and Firefox 3.5 with "special settings", which is now the KDE default browser in openSUSE.
More details about the release can be found in the release notes, change log and on the What's new in openSUSE 11.2 web page. A start-up guide, installation guide and screenshot tour are also provided. openSUSE 11.2 is available to download for 32 and 64-bit x86 systems as a DVD or LiveCD image. Alternatively, users can purchased a boxed copy of openSUSE 11.2. openSUSE is released under the openSUSE License.
