openSUSE 12.1 Milestone 5 released

The openSUSE project has released the fifth milestone of version 12.1 of its openSUSE operating system. The latest development preview is aimed at developers, testers and early adopters, and is the last milestone release; the final version is scheduled to arrive on 11 November 2011.

Milestone 5 brings further changes to enable systemd to replace the "InitV system", which is still currently the default, and includes GNOME 3.1.5, an unstable pre-release build of GNOME 3.2. The developers note that they are "focusing on the GPLed OpenJDK version now", adding that "this milestone is the last one that comes with the binary Java provided by Oracle". The GNU C Library (glibc) has been updated to version 2.14.

According to the most annoying bugs page, network installs ask users to import an openSUSE public key in the second stage when the key should already be trusted, and problems still remain in the KDE Network Manager, though a fix is already in the queue. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they find.

The fifth milestone of openSUSE 12.1 is available to download as a DVD or LiveCD image from the project's web site; users running the previous milestone can update by running "zypper dup" at the command line. The latest stable release is version 11.4 from March of this year.
